This really is an amazing invention. I was so terrified about how I was ever going to be able to get these scleral lenses in when I first decided to move forward with them. This insertion system has made such a big difference in getting the lenses in. I was getting so frustrated with the air bubbles and when my doctor finally said let’s try this, I honestly thought I was going to cry when it went in so easily. This device is a game charger if you’re new to scleral lens . My very first time wearing any form of lens, it took me about an hour at my doctor’s office to insert 1 lens. I am a first-time wearer of contact lenses of any kind, so I was concerned that scleral lens insertion would prove to be more of a challenge than I might want to take on. Fortunately, my optometrist introduced me to the S5 Mini during my initial instructional session with her. The contrast in ease with other insertion methods could not be greater! There is a downloadable manual that clearly explains the use and care of the S5 Mini, and its inventor/developer – himself an optometrist – takes care to follow up with any questions you may have about the device. I am still adjusting to my scleral lenses, but the S5 Mini is making the process much smoother.
My doctor and I had three consecutive one-hour sessions to train me on inserting my new scleral lenses. These were unsuccessful due to my abnormally tight eyelids. She recommended I get this device so I could use both hands to hold my eyelids open. The first time I used the S5 Mini I was able to insert the lens in my right eye on the 3rd try, and my really bad left eye on the 2nd attempt! It’s a miracle, and now I can see thanks to this device. Everything about it is brilliant!
My son has Asperger’s and things get very frustrating for him, getting these scleral contacts in for the regular person is challenging having Asperger’s and shaky hands on top of that makes it a NIGHTMARE. I am so thankful for this device. It is worth EVERY penny. Tommy has Keratoconus and cannot really see to insert these contacts so the light feature on it helps him focus. I have worn soft contacts for 30 years so imagine my chagrin when confronted with this new lens that took me over an hour on average to insert. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Southern College of Optometry to compare the efficacy and the perceived ease of use, comfort and safety of the S5 Mini™ to the DMV® Vented Scleral Cup™ which is considered to be the gold standard lens insertion method.
Study highlights include:
- 40 participants who had no prior scleral lens experience/wear were included in the study.
- The S5 Mini™ allowed participants to insert their lenses with 2.8 fewer insertion attempts per eye compared to the DMV® Vented Scleral Cup™ (P < 0.0001).
